Custom color graphics of the new Rainbow Dace pattern were designed by Joe Baltich and available only at Red Rock Wilderness Store! This new design closely emulates rainbow chubs which are pretty little minnows that walleyes like to snap up fast! Use smaller size Chubby Darters for finicky fish and bigger models when the fish exhibit more aggressive tendencies.
Salmo's Chubby Darters are already a classic and a definite "must have" among ice fisherman. The unique action of the Chubby Darter is primarily for vertical fishing where the bait quivers and darts as the angler pulls upward on the rod tip. Trout, perch, crappie, walleye and pike all fall for the Chubby Darter.
The Salmo Chubby Darter is great jerk bait for any kind of vertical fishing. Use it ice fishing or on the open water for walleye, pike, bass, crappies and lakers in sizes 4 thru 6.
More and more anglers are using the Chubby Darter in open water because it can be fished like any lipless crankbait, but sinks much slower, so you can fish it above cover much easier with the same quivering action. Simply put, the Chubby Darter can do things no other lure in the world can do. Anglers are finding more and more ways to fish the Chubby Darter, since it is totally unique and its action has never been seen before. Bass anglers are using the Chubby Darter for vertical fishing in the winter. Shore fishermen are casting from the banks of the Missouri River and catching walleyes like crazy in the Fall. To be very honest, the versatility of the Chubby Darter is totally untapped. One thing is known for sure, the Chubby Darter is a fish catching machine.
Can you add bait? So many times we get people telling us that they need to add a minnow head or wax worm to a lure to make it effective, and you can do this with the Chubby Darter as well. However, anyone who fishes the Chubby Darter knows the twitching of the tail hook triggers fish far better then bait in most situations. Remember, no other vertical fishing lure has an action like the Chubby Darter, so adding bait to your Chubby is not needed.
Dropper line fishing is becoming a real big deal for perch fishermen in super deep water when those jumbo perch are extra finicky. A dropper is a 6 inch piece of monofilament line attached to the front hook and a small ice fly with a piece of bait attached. The lure gives the action to attract the fish, and the dropper hook will close the deal.
We strongly recommend a small snap or loop knot when attaching a Chubby Darter to your line to make sure the lure has unrestricted ability to wiggle. We recommend a light line (4-6 lb test) to make it easier for the bait to drop to the bottom and it also lets the lure swim better.
