Needs a Lightweight, Stable Fishing Canoe
Q.Hi folks, a great web site. Here's what I need, or at least desire, and your advice is respectfully requested:
- This would be a fishing craft for solo or for two. If solo, of course, I sit in the bow facing to stern. If two folks, I might stand and pole the darn thing for flats fishing (I'm talking mainly fly fishing.)
- So, initial stability (to stand) seems pretty important.
- This boat should be maneuverable on rivers, and it will hit submerged rocks from time to time. It will also have lake use, but I won't use it on big seas.
- Weight is a big deal -- I'll pay for lightness as long as I am not foolishly buying something that will not stand up to intended use. But I'm a charter member of the baby boomer generation and lifting is always an issue.
- And -- if I were fishing the flats of the Mosquito Lagoon in Florida (literally just under the launch pad at Cape Canaveral) I might even want to carry a trolling motor to get out of dodge fast if the weather changes. Maybe this point is asking too much. I don't know how much a trolling motor weighs.
- I weigh 180 not including my fishing rod.
- I always used to put in to the BWCA and Quetico through Grand Marais, but would love an excuse to go to Ely.
Thank you for your consideration. I hope this finds you in a healthy and peaceful place.

A. Jack-
You want a Souris River Quetico 17. Stable, fast and nice handling. I'd recommend Le Tigre kevlar (for it's toned down appearance and re-finishability) at a weight of about 43 lbs. You could do Carbon Tec, but the 3 lb. weight reduction may not justify the extra $300. Hope this helps you out. If you have additional questions, please email or call us at 1-800-280-1078.
Happy Holidays!
