Solo Paddling the Souris River Quetico 18.5
Q. Quetico 18.5 3-seater
Do you think I could solo that thing out, just beyond the break line, to catch a few fish? Or is it impossible to paddle from the middle seat?
John
A. Not impossible from the 3rd seat
but it's a bit wide. Sure as heck won't hurt to try it from there, but I'd recommend unbolting and
removing the front thwart and sitting in the front seat looking backwards as well. From this
position, the canoe tapers off behind the paddler and you can use a J stroke all day long and
cruise. You will need some counter-weight in front right up against the air tank - bag of water,
sand, rock, heavier gear that you don't need to access. From either seat, you'll need to be
aggressive in the wind. It's a big canoe and paddling alone even if you weigh 300 lbs., you are not
going to make a big dent in the lake. With a strong J stoke ( as needed) and a strong sweep stroke,
you should be able to go anywhere except for into 2 foot whitecaps unless you are really good.
Hope this info helps.
