Vexilar has been the industry standard in depth locators for ice fishing longer than anyone else. They know how to get the job done and their loyal, steadfast client list proves that. We literally have customers who will only consider a Vexilar for ice fishing. There are good reasons for this stemming back of over 10+ years of being virtually the “only show in town”. There are some distinctive reasons for owning a Vexilar over other flasher units and one of them is their transducer. Vexilar transducers last a relative “forever” compared to everybody else’s transducers. Where you’ll get 5 years out of a Marcum, you’ll get 20 years out of a Vexilar. Now, there are exceptions to this rule, of course, but I have sure talked to a lot of ice fishermen who’ve had their Vexilar flasher for 20 years and the only thing they’ve replaced on it was the battery. I hear this more often than not. I’ve also heard stories and witnessed in person that the older model units do get a little “blobby” on the screen with clarity issues between the flasher lines (fuzzing out), so while their ‘ducers last a long time, the rest of the unit can wear out. So, buying a Vexilar does not guarantee that you’ll never need to buy another one, but they do spend a lot of time being quite productive for you.
The FLX-28 is the latest and greatest model from Vexilar. It came out last season and Vexilar is (deliberately) very slow to make all sorts of changes from year to year so the FLX-28 is going to be pretty identical to last season’s. Now, I don’t know all the intricacies of each electronic flasher on the market. I guess I simply don’t care. If I can see the solid bottom, a mud layer if there is one, little fish, big fish and some target separation, that is all I need. But, the FLX-28 adds the convenience of an LED readout on the front of the screen that tells you the actual depth and the Depth Range.
Other lower models in the Vexilar line don’t offer the numerical read out which is particularly helpful for those who’ve never used a flasher to get their bearings. When you see the depth says 26 feet and the bottom red line is stationary at 26 feet, it is easier to understand. Now as you can see below, the FLX-28 does a whole bunch of stuff. Fishing in weeds with the Weed Mode would be one thing that I would like. In weeds, all other electronics can’t see diddly. You just end up turning them off.
For the most part, to use the FLX-28, drop the transducer down the hole and turn the unit on. If you are in up to twenty feet of water, set the Depth Range to 20. If you are in 55 feet, choose the appropriate range and set it by turning the knob. That takes a whole two seconds to figure out. The FLX-28 has a Proview transducer on it and it determines what the best, sharpest setting it needs to function. You don’t have to do anything but turn the unit on. It’s pretty simple. With this flasher, all you need to know is that when you turn it on, you are getting a tuned up read-out right off the bat.
The other thing that is not written or spoken about in Vexilar’s line up is their power-saving feature. While it is running, there is a doodad that turns off the power 1o’s of thousands of times per second. This allows the battery to last longer than all other electronics. Vexilar won’t put a time on it, but I’ve known some fisherman who were able to get 5 days out of one charge. That’s pretty handy especially when most other brands last one day. If you are on a trip and don’t have charge capabilities, this can come in really handy.
This is the creme of Vexilar’s crop. All the technical details are below.
The features found in the FLX-28 read like the wish list of avid ice anglers starting with digital depth, Auto Range, Two zoom zones, battery status, FIVE color palettes to select from for maximum visibility, five foot depth range adjustments starting at 10 feet, Maximum range of 300, Day and Night display brightness settings, Low power options for fishing in super shallow water, a unique Weed Mode for better performance while fishing in weeds. And to top it all off, the unit even has its own Demo mode so you can show non-Vexilar fans how the system works with a lifelike fish catching simulation to watch.
There are more features to the FLX-28 series than ever before inside a single flasher sonar system. When fans of Vexilar say we could never improve the FL-8 that we introduced over 20 years ago, they were amazed when the FL-18 hit the ice in 2002. By the time the new flat screen FL-12 and 20 came out, Vexilar had established a new gold standard in flasher performance. Surely, Vexilar could not improve on this? Welcome to the age of the FLX series! A unique brushless data transfer design system allows for the creation of a breakthrough flasher display with digital depth and Auto Ranging technology. The FLX-28 is totally revolutionary in the world of winter flasher sonar technology. Vexilar has come a long way from the early FL-8, but Vexilar has never changed their commitment to deliver the very best sonar systems in the world for over 50 years. Performance, quality, innovation and reliability
